Frustratingly, it can sometimes feel like even if you’re doing everything right (a quiet sleep environment, avoiding stimulating activities before bed) you still can’t fall asleep. This is because sleep is influenced by both circadian rhythms (biological cycles of around 24h) and physiological needs, and so some people’s sleep cycles can seem consistently phase-shifted compared to others.
Studies show that these rhythms are genetically influenced. In short, we don’t get to choose whether we’re a night owl or an early bird.
So following your own sleep rhythms can be pretty helpful. Going to bed when you feel sleepy and waking up later. And if this really doesn’t fit in with your routine you can try methods like our Dreem Techniques to fall asleep earlier and/or the smart alarm, to wake up easily.
